“utopia Revisited” by Michael Loderstedt

Michael Loderstedt’s work incorporates photography, printmaking, artists books and installation. His recent projects have examined the first European landing sites in the New World and “garden cities”; utopian urban communities from the early 20th century in both Europe and the United States. One of his recent projects, a large format screenprint that when cut and folded creates a mid-century paper ocean liner complete with text in both German and English describing his own family’s immigrant history, was on exhibit at the International Print Center in New York.

Michael Loderstedt is a Professor of Art in Printmaking/Photography at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He completed two international residencies in 2006 at the Frans Masereel Center in Belgium and the Grafikwerkstatt in Dresden, Germany.

In 2008, he was invited to be an international faculty member of the 11th Internationale Sommerakademie in Dresden where he taught photo-etching. His work has been recently exhibited in several solo exhibitions in Germany at the Kulturrathaus in Dresden, the Alte Feuerwache Galerie in Loschwitz, and as part of Portrait 100 Project in Hellerau. Other recent exhibition venues have included the MIMB Project in Seoul, Korea and Columbia University in Chicago.

His work is contained in many regional public collections including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Progressive Insurance, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and the Akron Museum of Art. A recent portfolio of prints entitled Hausbuch(e) entered the international collection of the Kupferstich Kabinnett in Dresden in 2009. A recent 3-dimensional work entitled Schiff Geschicte has been featured on the printmaking art blog Printeresting at www.printeresting.org.

Loderstedt lives with his wife, photographer Lori Kella and their 8 year old son Ethan in Cleveland, Ohio near the shore of Lake Erie.
