The exhibition is a sampling of about 1% of the 20,000 postcards mailed to friends over the past twenty years. Sweeney lives and works in San Antonio, Texas. Typically using appropriated text and images in his work, Sweeney uses humor to expose universal truths, poking fun at the contemporary art world and reminding us to be vigilant about what we read. The “Post Obsessive” project is a peek into a mind that is in constant search for snippets of human folly. Each card is postmarked, personalized, addressed, and hand written. Images, clippings, and quotes are taken from the numerous newspapers he reads obsessively every day. In a digital age where images, text and information are shared so easily, Gary has chosen to use what is ultimately becoming an archaic form of communication. Each card is meant for one single person and opens a dialog that is both personal and on-going. Together the cards read as a narrative of the important and trivial moments that string together a life, a friendship, and a community.
